I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...my wife, Margaret, has a brain injury. In 2006 she suffered her first brain haemorrhage. We all thought she was a goner. She hung on in a coma in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for about a week. The radio was playing beside her bed throughout this time. One day the song 'Maggie May' came on. The first line "Wake up Maggie...." ringing out across the ward had staff and even the most concerned of relatives singing along in low tones. From then until she came back to the world of the living I couldn't get that song out of my head. Eventually Margaret has got back to a decent standard of health. She has a few difficulties, but in general she gets by. However Margaret has recently suffered a severe setback. Two weeks ago (Feb 9th 2010) she suffered another haemorrhage whilst in that same hospital for a procedure to fix an 'at risk' aneurysm. This latest bleed has caused a terrible stroke - much more severe than the previous one. She did not slip into a coma this time as doctors operated to remove a dangerous blood clot before she got to that stage. Yet again Rod came on the radio with THAT song. Once again I heard a nurse softly singing "Wake up Maggie...." This was at a time when Margaret was barely conscious. Although she will never regain the power of the left-hand side of her body she will work hard to get there. She is already moving up through the ward system from High Dependency to a general ward. Doctors are now talking about the next stage in her recovery programme. Margaret loves music. Furthermore she loves Rod Stewart. She has been a fan since the early 1970s.
